We are rearing a generation of unhealthy children whose daily food consumption consists primarily of “fast food” — whether prepared at home, school or restaurants — and sugary drinks. Children consume far too many non-nutritive calories and far too few nutrient-dense fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.
The nutrition and health data increasingly show that the QUALITY of calories consumed matters as much or more to health and wellness as do the QUANTITY of calories. Highly processed, heavily refined “chemical calories” are a direct contributor to the obesity epidemic that now impacts a startling number of Illinois children.
Through our Eat Real programs, genHkids works with schools, families, and community organizations to improve the quality of nutrition children consume every day.
