Andy Heck

Garden Educator

Andy Heck started with genHkids full time on Monday, November 2, 2015 as the organization’s Garden Educator.  Andy was introduced to genHkids during his tenure as owner/operator at Small Axe Farms, a local market garden selling to area farmers’ markets, local retail establishments and chefs.  He was integral in the development of the genHkids SPI Community Works gardens at 3rd and Canedy.

In addition to earning a BS in Biology from SIU Carbondale, Andy acquired a teaching certificate for secondary school sciences. He taught high school for 3 years prior to starting Small Axe Farms, and continued to substitute teach in area schools while farming. He currently serves as Board President for the Illinois Stewardship Alliance

As Garden Educator for genHkids, Andy is responsible for constructing, planning and maintaining school and community gardens and supplementing hands-on garden activities with in-classroom curriculum.
